I'm still in testing mode, but I've been itching to play xD. I wanted to test some sliders so I thought I'd start a season using the Vikings 2019 roster to get a feel for them. Won't do me much good to jump into a season with a 65 OVR QB and not have anything to compare the experience to, so I'm going to use Cousins to help me get things adjusted. I'm going to start with Danchat's sliders from his journal, and some penalty sliders I found over at footballidiot and go from there.
Here's the game log from my very first game, week 1 against Atlanta (using the real 2019 schedule).
As you can see, I had no trouble moving the ball offensively, on the ground or through the air xD. Cook had a monster day. I had the 3rd string skill players play the entire 4th quarter where I was in Zimmer mode and still moved the ball just fine haha.
Defensively it's a little more realistic, or maybe Dan is a whole lot better than I am haha. Despite using his sliders, it's not a true apples to apples comparison though. I made a bunch of tweaks behind the scenes to coaching tendencies and player attributes. My league should favor offense a little more because all the default settings favor defense too much (it's based on 2008 NFL after all), and that's exactly what I got this first game, offense.
I must confess, I hate playing defense in this game, and I have a history of just letting the CPU handle it while I watch. In fact I hate defense so much, but just watching the defense isn't always that much fun either because they can be pretty stupid, so I've had other franchises where I just played offense for both teams lol. In a way it's like playing against myself haha. But for this franchise I'll try to play defense. Because when I play offense for both the game usually comes down to who has the ball last xD.
So in this game the defense was pretty inconsistent. On some drives it seemed rather easy to stop Ryan and the Falcons, but then on others, like in the 2nd quarter there, I couldn't stop Ryan/Jones/Sanu to save my life. I think the CPU just cheats whenever it wants sometimes lol. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. Plus I forgot which audible button controls the double team. I'll have to figure that out.
I mostly control one of the safeties and try to protect against the deep ball because the CPU loves it's 75 yard bombs in Madden and the CB's can pretty useless. Just like the real Vikings I guess. Matty Ice got one early against me to Jones for 61 yards, so I started controlling the Hitman more to double Jones manually, which is why Sanu had a good game after that. The CPU was intentionally staying away from my side of the field it seemed no matter which safety I picked, so that was a little annoying. I don't think the safety I was controlling was involved in a single play on defense. I guess it didn't like my double coverage shading technique xD. The good thing is, once you've played Madden enough you can kinda tell which pattern the receiver is running so you can get ahead of it. Your double moves don't work on me CPU .
Statistically it turned out to be a normal game for Ryan and the Falcons I thought. A little pass heavy because they were down big early, but the run game felt right and I suppose the passing felt right too all things considered, other than Rhodes getting an INT on the 1st play of the game lol. Ryan threw it right to him. Waynes got one a bit later, which should have been a pick 6 with his speed, but for whatever reason he was pretty slow and easily got caught from behind.
I'll try a couple more games with these sliders just to make sure this game wasn't an offensive fluke. Dan tends to blowout his opponents too, so I think this will be the norm. I'll probably have to tone them down a bit to get down to around 25-30 PPG for this exercise. Defensively I might have to tone down the CPU passing ability and beef up the run, but we'll see.
I've got Rodgers next so that should be fun. The Bears beat them 21-6 in week one, holding them to just 2 FG's. Which is extremely odd because I have the league setup as close to the NFL as possible. In fact it probably favors the offenses a little too much right now based on the league average 26 PPG week 1. But that's why this is a testing phase, to get all that figured out, so I can get to my 2-14 season with my 65 OVR UDFA rookie QB haha. Should be fun.
