We did take one (and I think that was the reason we took it). Then Denver went out and got a pretty good chunk of yardage the next play and just let the clock run. In essence, if we kept doing that, we were going to stop the clock - Denver was then going to gash us with a running play (or a pass to the middle of he field) - and then Denver was going to let the clock run. All we would really doing at that point would be allowing Denver to conserve their time-outs. (Not that absolves the Vikings for not being able to play adequate defense in order to keep Denver from driving downfield in the first place.)

And seconds of all, yeah we did take a timeout with 10 seconds to go, but Zim wisely waited until just before they were going to snap the ball because the clock was still running and the Broncos didn't have any of their own timeouts. I mean wow, he really could have screwed that up if he took it as soon as the play ended and left the Broncos with 22 seconds or something. That would have given them 3 more plays from the 2, and I think many of us were already flirting with cardiac arrest. So that was a well planned timeout, and it worked. Gave the defense time to get it's sh*t together.

But yeah, taking timeouts because you think you're going to have to be on offense one more time only works if you actually stop the other team at some point lol, which we did not. The Broncos kept converting, so timeouts only would have given the Broncos a few more shots there at the end. And maybe that 1 timeout Zim took at 10 seconds gave the Broncos 1 extra shot, depending on how long it would have taken them to snap the ball had he not called the timeout. Had it taken more than 2 seconds, then Zim almost screwed himself because that final play was run with 2 seconds on the clock, which maybe wouldn't have been there if he didn't call the timeout. It would have been close. Then again, had he not taken the timeout maybe the defense wouldn't have been prepared for the next play.

In another “I can’t phucking believe it” moment from that game......... No flag for OPI on the last play? I know it wouldn’t of amounted to anything, by my God was that obvious. Denver receiver got up complaining too. 😮

I'm really starting to like it around here. Plenty of old salts like me that have a healthy Vikings skepticism! Like many here, I was thoroughly disgusted in how the Vikings started Sunday's game. Much like the GB game. I figured we would stay true to form and lose it in the end no matter what, and it almost happened that way. The defense is not good, period. Gave up 124 yards on the ground, 270 yards passing to a never-was, never-will-be QB, Denver had the ball for 36:43 to 23:17 and defense gave up 4/4 on 4th, two when it REALLY mattered on that last drive. The offensive line gave up 5 sacks and we turned it over twice. Down 20 zip at half. That all adds up to a loss 99 times out of 100. To a team that lost to JAX at home, got destroyed by KC at home, only beat CLE by 5 at home, and lost to CHI at home. Classic Vikings playing down to competition. OTOH, I'm glad the team stayed together and made the necessary adjustments to come back and win. These guys have shown character and resiliency. The TD pass from Cuz to Diggs was as good as any I've seen from anyone in awhile. Not sure why we are having such difficulties on defense. That needs to be cleaned up or it's one and done if we even make the playoffs. The "seems-like-an-annual" ass kicking at the hands of Seattle on the road in prime-time is coming up. I put that one down as a loss when the schedule came out. I'd love to be surprised by a win, but I think Wilson is going to carve us up like a boarding house pie. After all, the ball is named after him.

Thanks for the kind words. With respect to Zimmer's time-outs, you correctly pointed out that his second time out was taken with about 10 seconds left. I personally, thought that was a good one since the Vikings needed to get set for the final (as it turned out - 2) plays of the game. The one I was talking about was the one before that when Denver was driving.


It's entirely possible that I am mis-remembering this, but I thought he took one before the 10 second left time-out.  (BTW - Correcting my earlier reference to the game where the Vikings were 20 points down - I remembered the correct final score, but the year was '92' and not '93'  - So what the heck do I know?)

yeah, that skepticism is well earned unfortunately. 

There was a lot to like about this game. Typically we just roll over. KC showed he can occasionally be the guy so to speak...

There was a lot not to like though too. The team was pretty clearly unprepared. The secondary was again awful. I think teams have learned that they can stop us by selling out for the run. I don't understand why Stefanski doesn't go a bit more PA heavy to start games and see if they can catch teams doing that. The PA can be quite affective in opening up the running game just as the running game can open up the passing game.

Saints toughest game other than SF is probably at Tennessee, or hosting Indy-neither is a likely loss
Packers have at San Fran and at Minnesota
The Vikings have Seattle and Green Bay.

A lot of opportunities for chaos at the end.
But win your games and don't worry about anybody else.

I'd actually argue we did break, to give up four opportunities to stop them. Giving up a 4-and-1, fair enough, but not the other three and not all four on one drive.

And did Zimmer again call a time-out when the opposition were scrambling for time? Done that the last three weeks when the game is on the line. Now, maybe I don't know much, but I would have thought letting the clock run would increase the pressure on the opposition?

It does (and I concur) usually increase pressure on the opposition, but it didn't look like we had our Sh...tuff together on defense before we called the T/O.  I mean it's all relative - so to clarify - We looked like we had it even less together than the previous 37 plays on that drive.  I thought at the time that it was a good time out to call.  YMMV

Well depending on what the Vikings goals are, they don't control their own destiny. Even if the Vikings win-out and go 13-3, they're going to need someone to beat the Packers because they'd hold the division tie-breaker in a win-out scenario. Same with the #1 or #2 seed, we're going to need some teams to lose some games. Thankfully some of those teams play each other, like you pointed out, the 49ers host the Packers next week. The 49ers also have to play at Saints and at Seahawks one more time. But I think winning-out is pretty much wishful thinking at this point, unless we somehow win at Seattle after the bye.

That is the key.  Don't know if we can do it, but feel we have a chance.
