EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Vikings plan to secure some quarterback depth, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan.
After Matt Cassel broke his foot during Sunday's game, the Vikings will add a familiar face back into the fold, per Caplan
The Vikings originally lost Bethel-Thompson in 2013 to the 49ers. He has been with the Vikings, 49ers, Dolphins and Patriots organizations, either on the active roster or the practice squad.
On the possibility of adding another quarterback to the roster, in case of injury to starter Teddy Bridgewater or backup Christian Ponder, head coach Mike Zimmer said: "Possibly. We'll see. I mean, we'll see what the extent of Matt's injury is, how long he'll be out."
Cassel will visit a foot specialist Thursday, Zimmer said.
Fox reported during Sunday's broadcast that Jarius Wright, MarQueis Gray and Cordarrelle Patterson would serve as the backup quarterbacks Sunday in an emergency, since Ponder was inactive. Jerick McKinnon also played triple-option quarterback at Georgia Southern before the Vikings drafted him in the third round as a running back.
The Vikings obviously would need to heavily modify their gameplan if the situation called for one of those contingency options.
